This is a situation that drives the inner Grammar Nazi in me insane. I try not to let it get to me, but for whatever reason, it just does (I know, I know, First World Problems). I don't correct people one on one. I just suffer in silence, but it does hurt my heart a bit. I scroll through my news feed on Facebook, and I see it time and time again. I cringe, but just correct it in my head and move on. But, I just cannot stay silent any longer, people, I need to say something! This is too long to put as a status on Facebook, so I figured I'd use this little read blog to spread the word. :-) I'm in no way saying that the people doing this are uneducated, not at all. In fact, most of them are very very intelligent people. I love my friends dearly, and I hope that no one gets offended, but if you do, just chalk it up to the title of the blog and move on. Who knows? Maybe someone will learn something too? Learning is always a good thing.
All of our lives, our teachers and our parents have corrected us in the use of the word "me." That's mostly because we were using it wrong at the time. There is a right way to use the word and I think because so many people were corrected in it's use that we tend to forget that. There is a basic rule for the I/me situation. USE IT IN A SENTENCE! It if doesn't make sense, then you don't use it! Now, let's go over a few examples...
1. In a picture. You would never never say, "This is I in this picture," would you? Nope, You would say, "That's me." I is not appropriate, use me.
2. When talking about a group of people. Please don't say, "Abby, Tom and me went to the carnival twice." This is one of those teacher scolding times. Please say, "Abby, Tom and I went to the carnival twice." Me is not appropriate, use I.
3. When you're referring to a situation like, "I can see us doing this," but you use the names instead. For example, when you say, "I can see Tom and I doing this." That sounds wrong...really wrong. Doing is a form of do, so in essence, you're saying, "I can see I do this." That sounds like a cave man. Me is appropriate here.
Those are the 3 main situations that I see (everyday). But, I think that you get the point. I beg of you, please please please think about what you're posting in the I/me situation before you post it. My inner Grammar Nazi thanks you. Lesson over. Have a great day!
