Halloween Going Too Far?

Halloween has always been one of my favorite "holidays."  I always loved an opportunity to pretend to be something that I wasn't.  I loved it.  As kids, we would come up with what we wanted to be, and my mom and aunt would work diligently coming up with a homemade costume for my cousins, my brother and myself.  We had some pretty awesome costumes too.  One year, I was a ladybug.  My mom still has most of the costume.  As I got older, I got boring with my costume choices and started just using the standby bunny rabbit costume.  That consisted of getting the bunny accessories.  I'd pin the tail on a pair of white sweat pants and paint my nose pink and wear the ears.  Or, I'd go with a 50's girl...the poodle skirt, the saddle shoes and a white button down shirt with a cardigan if I could find one.  Yeah, I love Halloween and still try to make my daughter's costumes.  She wanted to be Rainbow Dash this year, so I came up with this...

The front...

The Back...

And a hand-drawn cutie mark...not too shabby if I do say so myself...

I'm quite proud of my masterpiece, and she LOVES it.  Plus, it's a sweat suit so it will keep her warm.  SCORE!  I am still flying high on the end result.

So, last night, I picked up the catalog from Spirit Halloween store.  I still love to look through the catalog even though I make her costumes most times.  They usually have some cute stuff in there.  I opened it up and cooed over the baby costumes.  They really are adorable.  I flipped a couple of pages in and I am HORRIFIED at some of the costumes for KIDS.  No lie, there are girls no older than 7 modeling these costumes that make them look like they're ready to walk the streets!  When did it become appropriate for little girls to wear skirts that barely cover their butts and top it off with fishnets?  Seriously!  WHEN did THIS become acceptable?

WHY does a little girl need to be "Sassy?"  The top is polyester, but it looks like freaking LEATHER!  The skirt is so short that it leaves nothing to the imagination.  Yes, it comes with tights, but this skirt is still so short that it's ridiculous.

Here's another one...
OK, so I understand that these toys are popular now, but COME ON!  LOOK AT THIS KID!

Oh, and here's a really great one for tweens...

Seriously?  My mom would kick my butt if I walked out wearing this TODAY and I'm 34 years old!

OK, one last example for now.  This one is probably not going to win me any popularity points because these dolls (which I think are absolutely disgustingly ugly) are extremely popular with the girls...
Yeah, Monster High.  These dolls are so slutty it's not even funny.  This is what we let our girls play with?  This is what we want them to dress like?  Really?  What happened to My Little Pony and Care Bears?  Oh, yeah, they've become sexualized too.  Oh, yes, as I was flipping through the catalog, hoping that things would get better, I came across this...
Seriously?  THAT is supposed to be Rainbow Dash?  They must not watch the show.  RD would NEVER wear a dress like this.  She's a tomboy...oh, yeah, and WHERE are her wings?

Oh, and I came across this (and a few other Care Bears, but all the costumes are the same, different colors and belly badges)...
This is marketed for TWEENS!  OK, I'm just going to say it...WTF????????  Where's the rest of it??  $45 and it doesn't cover a damn thing!

Seriously, people.  Wake up.  These are NOT ok!  Our girls are being sexualized younger and younger.  It's not ok to have a 7-8 year old walking around in a short dress that is skimpy up top.  It's not ok to just throw a headband with a cardboard cut out of Rainbow Dash's head on it and call it a costume.  Things are getting so out of control with this anymore.  Little girls should NEVER be exploited like this.  They're children, let them be children.
